The Ondo State Government has called on members, aspirants and supporters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to conduct themselves peacefully and responsibly during the party’s forthcoming primaries in the state.

The ruling party is scheduled to hold primaries for the State House of Assembly, House of Representatives and Senate seats between May 15 and May 20.

The State Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Idowu Ajanaku, made the appeal in a statement issued to journalists on Wednesday, describing the exercise as a critical democratic process that must be transparent, orderly and violence-free.

According to him, the state government expects party leaders, stakeholders and supporters to ensure that the primaries are conducted peacefully before, during and after the exercise.

“The primaries represent another important democratic process for the ruling party and urged all aspirants, party leaders and supporters to ensure the exercise remains hitch-free, transparent and devoid of violence or rancour before, during and after the polls,” the statement read.

Ajanaku added that Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa remained committed to maintaining peace and order throughout the primaries in line with the directive of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

He noted that Ondo State must continue to serve as a model of political maturity and democratic excellence through the conduct of party members and stakeholders.

The government also disclosed its support for the directive of the National Working Committee of the APC recommending the adoption of direct primaries in areas where no consensus candidate had emerged.
