The management of Obafemi Awolowo University has dismissed a purported resumption notice circulating on social media, warning students and members of the public to disregard the information as fake and unauthorised.
In a statement issued on Friday, the institution’s Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Olarewaju, said the university was still observing the three-week mid-semester break earlier approved by the Senate.
Olarewaju explained that the controversial document was falsely presented as an official communication from the Office of the Registrar, stressing that neither the Registrar nor any authorised organ of the university issued the notice.
According to him, the signature attached to the document was forged.
“The attention of the Management of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, has been drawn to the circulation of a fake letter purportedly issued and signed by the Registrar of the University in respect of the ongoing three-week mid-semester break approved by the University Senate,” the statement read.
The university spokesperson described those behind the fake notice as “mischief makers and agents of confusion” seeking to mislead members of the university community and create unnecessary tension.
He further condemned the circulation of the document, describing its content as false, malicious and irresponsible.
“The content is not only false and highly malicious, but also satanic in intent, reckless in conception and condemnable in its entirety,” Olarewaju added.
The university urged students, parents, guardians, alumni, staff and other stakeholders to ignore the purported resumption directive, insisting that it carried no legitimacy or approval from the institution.
Olarewaju reiterated the management’s commitment to transparency, peace, orderliness and the welfare of members of the university community.
He also assured stakeholders that all official information concerning the institution would continue to be disseminated through recognised and verified communication channels.
The university further appealed to members of the public to remain calm, vigilant and law-abiding while avoiding the spread of misinformation capable of causing confusion within the academic community.
