Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has commended President Bola Tinubu and the Federal Executive Council (FEC) for approving Phase 1A of the Lagos Green Line Rail Project, describing the decision as a breakthrough for the state’s transport infrastructure.
In a statement shared via his official X (formerly Twitter) account on Friday, the governor expressed appreciation on behalf of the state government and residents, noting that the approval marks a significant step toward addressing Lagos’ persistent mobility challenges.
The Lagos Green Line Rail was among the three rail projects approved by the FEC in their meeting presided over by the president on Thursday.
According to Taiwo Oyedele, Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, the federal government is committing $2.99bn to three major rail projects across Lagos, Kano and Kaduna states.
Sanwo-Olu said the Lagos Green Line Rail Project, when completed, will stretch approximately 68 kilometres, linking Marina to the Lekki Free Trade Zone.
The rail corridor is expected to feature about 17 stations strategically located across key areas, including Victoria Island, Ajah, and other parts of the rapidly expanding Lekki axis.
According to the governor, the project is designed to transform urban transportation in the state, with an initial capacity to convey up to 500,000 passengers daily.
He added that this figure is projected to increase to about one million passengers over time as demand grows and infrastructure expands.
He further disclosed that the rail system will be capable of moving as many as 35,000 passengers per hour in each direction, a development he said would significantly reduce travel time, decongest roads, and improve overall commuting efficiency across Lagos.
Sanwo-Olu emphasised that the Green Line project aligns with his administration’s broader strategy to modernise transportation systems, stimulate economic growth, and enhance the quality of life for residents in Africa’s most populous city.
The governor also acknowledged the continued support of the federal government, expressing confidence that the project would be executed successfully to meet the growing transportation needs of Lagosians.
