Lagos State Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat has initiated early-stage political consultations with the Governance Advisory Council (GAC), signalling a strategic move ahead of the 2027 governorship election cycle.
In a statement shared on his X (formerly Twitter) account, Hamzat confirmed he met with the caucus on Monday.
He described the engagement as “thoughtful conversations about the future of Lagos and the kind of leadership it requires,” adding that he values the guidance provided as he seeks to “work with others to build a stronger Lagos.”
The meeting highlights the critical role of the GAC, which is widely considered the most influential decision-making body within the Lagos branch of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Led by Tajudeen Olusi, the council consists of roughly 30 veteran politicians and key stakeholders, including President Bola Tinubu and Senator Oluremi Tinubu.
The body wields significant influence over succession planning, political zoning, and strategic endorsements.
Hamzat’s engagement follows a traditional pattern in Lagos politics, where aspirants often begin structured dialogues with party elders years before formal primary elections.
While the meeting has sparked significant online speculation, some reports remain unverified.
One social media commentary account claimed that Otunba Alebiosu, a Lagos East senatorial leader and GAC member, was moved to tears of joy following reports that Hamzat had secured the council’s endorsement as the APC’s 2027 candidate.
However, no official confirmation of a formal endorsement has been issued by the council.
Hamzat’s political positioning has been supported by prior endorsements from the Justice Forum.
Unfolding events within the state chapter of the party also suggest that the deputy governor stands the chance of emerging as the party’s consensus candidate for the upcoming election.
