The Ogun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has officially adopted Senator Solomon Adeola, popularly known as “Yayi,” as its consensus candidate for the 2027 governorship election.
The decision was reached during a strategic caucus meeting held at the party’s secretariat in Abeokuta on Monday.
Presided over by Ogun State APC Chairman Yemi Sanusi, the meeting brought together a high-profile assembly of party leaders and stakeholders.
Governor Dapo Abiodun announced Adeola as the party’s consensus choice, calling on all other aspirants to rally behind the lawmaker to ensure party unity.
The announcement was met with jubilation from party members present at the meeting.
The caucus was attended by several political heavyweights, including former governors Chief Olusegun Osoba, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, and Gbenga Daniel – the latter attending despite his reported suspension from the party last August.
Other notable attendees included Senator Iyabo Obasanjo and Gboyega Isiaka, a fellow governorship aspirant.
In his acceptance speech, Senator Adeola pledged to maintain the peace and progress achieved in Ogun State over the last three years.
He emphasised his commitment to unity, stating his intention to keep the party and the state “one indivisible family”.
“I promise to keep the flag flying,” Adeola said. “I will make sure the ship I am about to take over does not derail. A new Ogun State is born, and we will take it to the next level we all desire.”
The state chairman of the party noted that the caucus was convened to prevent internal friction and ensure a rancour-free primary process.
He emphasised that the goal was to carry all stakeholders along to maintain stability ahead of the 2027 polls.
Following the consensus announcement, Senator Iyabo Obasanjo officially suspended her gubernatorial ambitions.
In a statement, the former lawmaker expressed her support for Adeola and thanked her supporters for their steadfastness during her consultation process.
The move toward a consensus candidate follows earlier reports suggesting that APC stakeholders, following discussions with President Bola Tinubu, were moving toward unified arrangements for governorship slots in Ogun, Lagos, and Oyo states.
