The Oyo State Independent Electoral Commission (OYSIEC) has reaffirmed its commitment to conducting a free, fair, and credible local government election scheduled for December 29, 2026.

Chairman of the commission, Dr. Babatunde Adeniyi, gave the assurance in Ibadan while receiving members of the Oyo State Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), led by its Chairman, Yinka Adeniran, during a courtesy visit.

Adeniyi stated that the commission had already commenced necessary preparations for the elections, stressing that all processes were being handled in accordance with established electoral laws and guidelines.

“All the processes leading to the election are in top gear. We are committed to complying with all relevant laws to ensure a credible exercise that will be acceptable to political parties and the electorate,” he said.

The OYSIEC boss underscored the importance of collaboration with key stakeholders, particularly the media and political parties, noting that their support would be critical to the success of the electoral process.

He also highlighted the need to tackle voter apathy, a recurring challenge in local government elections across the state.

Adeniyi commended media practitioners for their consistent role in promoting transparency and accountability, describing them as a vital link between the government and the people.

He pledged to build on the existing relationship to enhance public trust in the electoral process.

“This visit is significant, and we do not take it for granted. The media has consistently served as a bridge between leaders and citizens, and your balanced reportage has been invaluable to us,” he added.

He further emphasized that the commission would rely heavily on media support to ensure effective public enlightenment and participation throughout the electoral cycle.

Also speaking, OYSIEC Commissioner, Remi Ayoade, urged all political parties in the state to actively participate in the forthcoming elections, stressing that inclusiveness remains key to strengthening democracy at the grassroots level.

Earlier, the chairman of the Correspondents’ Chapel of NUJ expressed confidence in Adeniyi’s leadership, describing him as a seasoned unionist with a track record of advocating for the welfare of the people.

Adeniran noted that Adeniyi’s experience would bring positive transformation to the commission and pledged the continued support of journalists in ensuring a successful electoral process.

“We are confident in your ability to deliver a credible and transparent election that will deepen democracy at the grassroots for the benefit of the people of Oyo State,” he said.
