The Federal Government has declared Thursday, March 19, and Friday, March 20, 2026, as public holidays to mark the celebration of Eid-el-Fitr, the festival that signifies the end of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on behalf of the Federal Government.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Interior, Magdalene Ajani, conveyed the minister’s warm greetings and congratulations to Muslim faithful across the country on the successful completion of the Ramadan fast.

Tunji-Ojo commended Muslims for their dedication and spiritual discipline during the fasting period and urged them to continue upholding the values emphasised throughout the holy month.

He specifically encouraged the faithful to sustain the virtues of love, generosity, peace, tolerance, and sacrifice, noting that these principles are vital for strengthening social harmony and national development.

The minister also called on Nigerians to use the festive period to offer prayers for the continued peace, unity, and prosperity of the country.

While wishing Muslim faithful a joyous Eid-el-Fitr celebration, Tunji-Ojo advised citizens to celebrate responsibly and extend acts of kindness to the less privileged in society.

He reiterated the Federal Government’s commitment to promoting national unity and fostering peaceful coexistence among Nigerians, irrespective of religious or ethnic differences.

Eid-el-Fitr is one of the most important celebrations in the Islamic calendar and marks the conclusion of the month-long Ramadan fast observed by Muslims worldwide.
