The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has postponed the inauguration of its newly elected state executive committee following the death of the party’s Assistant Publicity Secretary-elect, Yesiro Karamo.
Karamo reportedly died on Wednesday, just hours after attending the Lagos APC congress held on Tuesday at the Mobolaji Johnson Stadium in Onikan, where he was elected into the position.
The party confirmed the development in a statement issued on Thursday by the Lagos APC Publicity Secretary, Seye Oladejo, describing the incident as a painful loss for the party.
According to the statement, the party received the news of Karamo’s sudden demise with deep shock and sorrow.
“The Lagos State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress received with profound shock and deep sorrow the news of the sudden demise of our newly elected Assistant Publicity Secretary, Karamo Yesiro,” the statement said.
It added that his death came at a time when his commitment and passion for progressive politics were needed most.
“Yesiro’s passing is a painful and tragic loss to our great party at a time when his energy, commitment, and passion for progressive politics were most needed.
“Having just been entrusted with the responsibility of serving in the State Executive Council, he embodied dedication, loyalty, and an unwavering belief in the ideals of our party.”
Party members and supporters had gathered at the APC secretariat in Acme, Ogba, on Thursday morning for the planned inauguration of the newly elected executives.
However, they were informed that the event had been postponed in honour of the late party chieftain.
Following the announcement, several party leaders reportedly left the secretariat to pay condolence visits to the bereaved family.
Some party stalwarts later indicated that the inauguration of the new executives had been rescheduled for Friday.
The newly elected Lagos APC state executive committee, which will serve a four-year term, is led by the state chairman, Cornelius Ojelabi.
Other members of the executive include Moshood Olanrewaju as Deputy Chairman, Adeola Jokomba as Secretary, Azizat Mariam as Assistant Secretary, and Seye Oladejo as Publicity Secretary.
Also elected are Babajide Sunday as Vice Chairman, Shola Eletu as Woman Leader, and Ayodele Adewale as Organising Secretary.
The APC congress held on Tuesday attracted prominent political figures in the state, including Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat, and Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudasiru Obasa.
Other dignitaries present were the leader of the Governor’s Advisory Council, Tajudeen Olusi; the Secretary to the State Government, Bimbola Salu-Hundeyin; former Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode; governorship aspirant Olajide Adediran; and former Senator Ganiyu Solomon.
