Renowned gospel singer Tope Alabi has paid glowing tribute to veteran gospel musician Toun Soetan, who has died at the age of 73.

Alabi described the late singer as a spiritual mentor and one of the matriarchs of Nigeria’s gospel music ministry, celebrating her life of service and commitment to spreading the Christian faith through music.

In a tribute shared on her Instagram page, Alabi said Soetan lived a life devoted to Christ and left behind an enduring legacy within the gospel music community.

She was a true spiritual mother and a matriarch in gospel music,” Alabi wrote.

Her life was a reflection of Christ, and her impact in the gospel music ministry will never be forgotten. She lived for Christ and preached Him through her life and music.

Though we will miss her, we are comforted knowing she has gone to be with the Lord. Rest well, Mama. Your legacy lives on.”

News of Soetan’s passing was earlier confirmed on Friday by popular gospel comedian Woli Agba, who announced the development in a social media post.

Over the course of a career that spanned more than four decades, Soetan earned recognition for several popular gospel songs, including Train Up Your Child” and Darling Jesus.”

Her music and ministry inspired many believers and emerging gospel artistes across Nigeria and beyond.

Born in Lagos, Soetan was raised in a Muslim family before converting to Christianity in 1974.

Following her conversion, she dedicated her life to gospel music and Christian ministry, becoming one of the respected voices in the Nigerian gospel music scene.

Throughout her career, she was widely regarded for using her songs to promote Christian values, encourage believers, and support faith-based teachings.

The late gospel minister is survived by her husband, members of her family, and a wide community of gospel ministers and followers whose lives she influenced through decades of music and ministry.

Her passing has continued to draw tributes from fans, colleagues, and members of the gospel music community who remember her as a pioneering voice and spiritual mentor.
