President Bola Tinubu has formally requested the Nigerian Senate to confirm Taiwo Oyedele as a minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
Oyedele, who currently serves as the Chairman of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms, was nominated on March 3 for appointment as Minister of State for Finance.
If confirmed by the Senate, Oyedele will replace Doris Uzoka-Anite in the role. Uzoka-Anite is expected to be redeployed to the Federal Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning as Minister of State, a move that would mark her third ministerial portfolio under the Tinubu administration.
The president’s request was conveyed in a letter read during Tuesday’s plenary by the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio.
In the correspondence, Tinubu stated that the nomination was made in accordance with Section 147(2) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended), which grants the president the authority to appoint ministers subject to confirmation by the Senate.
“In compliance with the provisions of Section 147(2) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 as amended, I am pleased to forward to the Senate for confirmation the nomination of Mr Taiwo Oyedele as Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” the letter read.
The president further expressed optimism that the upper legislative chamber would give the nomination swift consideration.
“While I hope that this request will receive the expeditious consideration of the Senate, please accept, Distinguished Senate President, the assurances of my highest regards,” Tinubu added.
Following the reading of the letter, Akpabio referred the nomination to the Committee of the Whole for further legislative consideration.
“In line with our practice and considering the urgency, the nomination is hereby referred to the Committee of the Whole for consideration,” the Senate President said.
The confirmation process will determine whether Oyedele officially joins the Federal Executive Council as Minister of State for Finance.
