President Bola Tinubu has commended the Super Eagles for their authoritative 2-0 victory over Algeria in the quarter-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations on Saturday, describing the performance as inspiring and worthy of national pride.
Nigeria sealed their place in the semi-finals with a commanding display at the Grand Stade de Marrakech, dismantling a resolute Algerian side that had conceded just once in the competition prior to the encounter. The Algeria national football team, known as the Desert Foxes, were unable to cope with Nigeria’s intensity and precision, particularly after the break.
Reacting shortly after the final whistle, President Tinubu took to X (formerly Twitter) to applaud the team’s effort.
“Brilliant performance… inspiring. Go, Super Eagles! You have the support of all Nigerians,” the President wrote, accompanied by the hashtags #Naija4TheWin and #AFCON2025.
After a goalless first half, Nigeria broke the deadlock in the 47th minute when Victor Osimhen powered home a header from Bruno Onyemaechi’s cross. Ten minutes later, Akor Adams doubled the advantage, calmly finishing after being teed up by Osimhen following a slick buildup involving Alex Iwobi.
The Super Eagles dominated proceedings, creating several clear-cut chances and pinning Algeria back for long spells. In a striking statistic that underlined Nigeria’s control, Algeria failed to register a single shot on target throughout the match. Late introductions, including Moses Simon, ensured Nigeria managed the closing stages with composure and tactical discipline.
Speaking after the match, Osimhen expressed gratitude to Nigerian supporters at home and abroad.
“Hello to the Super Eagles fans. Thank you so much for your support worldwide,” he said. “This victory was not easy, and I’m happy that the team got the win against Algeria. We will continue to build on this momentum and hopefully get to the final and win it.”
The win sets up a blockbuster semi-final clash against tournament hosts Morocco national football team, a tie expected to test Nigeria’s title credentials. With confidence soaring and the attack firing, the Super Eagles are firmly positioned to push for a fourth continental crown.
President Tinubu has remained a vocal supporter of Nigeria’s national teams. He recently fulfilled reward pledges made to the Super Eagles following their 2023 AFCON campaign and has consistently backed the team’s participation at AFCON 2025.
Similarly, after the Super Falcons clinched the 2024 WAFCON title, the President announced national honours, three-bedroom apartments in Abuja, and substantial cash rewards for both players and technical crew, underscoring his administration’s commitment to sports development and excellence.
