President Bola Tinubu has paid glowing tribute to elder statesman and former Osun State governor, Bisi Akande, describing him as a mentor, moral compass and one of the most exemplary leaders to emerge from Nigeria’s progressive political tradition.

In a birthday message issued on Friday to commemorate Akande’s 87th anniversary, Tinubu said the former governor has remained a steadfast believer in values that uplift the nation, noting that his integrity, honesty and uprightness have continued to inspire generations of political actors.

The President acknowledged Akande’s personal influence on his political evolution, expressing deep gratitude for the elder statesman’s counsel, encouragement and support over the years, which he said played a significant role in his own journey to the presidency.

“Having Baba Akande in my corner as a partner and ally has proved tremendously helpful,” Tinubu said, adding that the nonagenarian-in-waiting remains mentally strong, principled and unwavering despite his age.

Tinubu also commended Akande for his continued support for the current administration and its policy direction, including the Renewed Hope Agenda, describing him as a dependable ally who has never wavered in his commitment to progressive ideals.

Reflecting on Akande’s long career in public service, the President described him as a key pillar in Nigeria’s democratic evolution, whose leadership and sacrifice have helped to entrench progressive politics in the country.

According to Tinubu, Akande’s industry, wisdom and labour of love were instrumental to the growth and consolidation of the All Progressives Congress, particularly during its formative years.

Akande, an accountant by training, began his professional career with British Petroleum before venturing into politics, inspired by the ideological vision and political philosophy of Obafemi Awolowo.

His political trajectory saw him serve as Secretary to the State Government in the old Oyo State in 1979, Deputy Governor during the Second Republic, and later Governor of Osun State from 1999 to 2003.

Tinubu recalled that as interim national chairman of the APC, Akande laid the structural and ethical foundation for a political party that went on to achieve a historic milestone by unseating an incumbent federal government in 2015.

The President further praised Akande as a consistent advocate of democracy, social justice and good governance, stressing that age has not diminished his readiness to speak truth to power or stand firmly for what he believes is right.

“As he marks his 87th birthday, I pray for good health and renewed strength for Chief Akande,” Tinubu said.

Widely regarded as one of the foremost figures in Nigeria’s progressive movement, Akande remains an influential voice in national affairs and a reference point for principled leadership across party lines.
