The Osun State Police Command has commenced a formal review and ordered a comprehensive investigation into the alleged shooting and pursuit of a student and his family in Osogbo, the state capital.

The development follows a viral video and a press statement issued by the National Association of Nigerian Students, Southwest Zone D, which raised concerns over the reported incident said to have occurred on February 22, 2026.

In a statement released on Monday by the Police Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Ojelabi, the Command confirmed that it had been alerted to the allegations circulating online.

“The attention of the Command has been drawn to a viral video and a press statement issued by the Assistant General Secretary, National Association of Nigerian Students, Southwest Zone D, regarding the alleged shooting and pursuit incident in Osogbo,” the statement read.

According to the police, the incident was reported to have taken place between Itaolokan Junction and the Oke Ayepe area of Osogbo. Authorities disclosed that an immediate internal review had commenced, with preliminary findings currently being gathered.

“The Command has commenced an immediate review of the incident. Preliminary findings are being compiled, including operational records and eyewitness accounts,” Ojelabi stated.

In a show of responsiveness, the Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Gotan, represented by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations and other senior officers, visited the victims at the hospital.

Police authorities confirmed that the injured persons are responding positively to treatment. The Command also undertook responsibility for settling the victims’ medical expenses.

“The victims are responding to treatment, and the Command has taken it upon itself to take care of the medical bills,” the statement added.

The Command further revealed that officers suspected to have been involved in the alleged incident are currently under investigation. It warned that any unauthorised or reckless discharge of firearms would attract strict disciplinary action.

“Any unauthorised or reckless discharge of firearms, if established, will not be condoned. Officers found culpable will face appropriate disciplinary consequences,” the statement stressed.

The police appealed to members of the public with credible information or video evidence to assist ongoing investigations. While assuring residents that justice would be pursued based strictly on facts and verifiable evidence, the Command also urged stakeholders to remain calm as due process unfolds.

The outcome of the investigation is expected to determine whether established operational protocols were breached and whether disciplinary or criminal proceedings will follow.
