The Oyo State Government has commenced the demolition of illegal structures and makeshift shops erected on road reserves across the state, beginning with key routes in Ibadan.

This follows the expiration of the 14-day eviction notice issued to traders and squatters on October 13, 2025, which elapsed on October 27, 2025. The government also gave a final reminder last week, urging full compliance before the enforcement began.

The operation, which started on Monday, was spearheaded by the Oyo State Rule of Law Enforcement Authority (OYRLEA) in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, the Oyo State Road Transport Management Authority (OYRTMA), the Environmental Task Force, and various security agencies including the Nigeria Police, Amotekun Corps, and other state operatives.

Led by DCP Francis Ojomo (Rtd.) and Mrs. Iyabo Akinbode, Chief of Staff to the OYRLEA Chairperson, the joint team began the clearance exercise from Airport Junction through Alakia–Adegbayi to Old Ife Road, removing iron containers, kiosks, and goods obstructing the right of way.

Speaking on the operation, Honourable Justice Aderonke Adekemi Aderemi (Rtd.), Chairperson of OYRLEA, reaffirmed the state’s determination to enforce environmental and planning regulations to ensure orderliness and safety.

“Our environment must be welcoming and safe for investors. This has always been the utmost desire of our people-oriented Governor, His Excellency, Engr. Seyi Makinde, on whose mandate we operate,” Justice Aderemi stated.

She added that the clean-up was essential in preparation for the upcoming commissioning of the Ibadan International Airport, stressing that the government had embarked on extensive sensitization campaigns before enforcement began.

The government has urged traders operating along Airport Road, Old Ife Road, and Onipepeye to vacate the cleared areas immediately, warning that those who return will face prosecution.

In a statement signed by Prince Dotun Oyelade, Commissioner for Information, the state reiterated its zero-tolerance policy on environmental violations and urged affected persons to see the exercise as a final opportunity to comply with lawful directives.
