The cinematic release Oversabi Aunty, directed by and starring Nollywood powerhouse Toyin Abraham, has crossed the coveted ₦1 billion mark at the box office, consolidating its place among the most commercially successful Nigerian films of all time.
The milestone was officially announced by film distribution company FilmOne, which disclosed via its Instagram platform that the movie has grossed a total of ₦1,017,201,953 from cinema screenings across West Africa.
According to FilmOne, the achievement positions Oversabi Aunty as the first Nollywood directorial debut to surpass the ₦1 billion benchmark and the fourth highest-grossing Nollywood film in cinema history, an extraordinary feat in an industry still navigating structural and economic challenges.
In a celebratory post, the distributor described the moment as a landmark victory not only for the film’s creative team but also for the Nigerian movie industry at large.
“₦1 Billion+ at the box office. First Nollywood directorial debut to hit ₦1 Billion. 4th-highest-grossing Nollywood film of all time. West Africa, this is a full celebration!!!” FilmOne wrote.
Reacting to the development, Abraham expressed profound gratitude, crediting God, her fan base – fondly called the Toyintitans – and the cast and crew who worked on the project. Describing the success as overwhelming, the filmmaker noted that the journey marked a defining moment in her career.
“My first directorial debut on the big screen. Oversabi Aunty to the world and still showing in cinemas near you. Thank you, God. Thank you, Toyintitans. Thank you, Nigerians. Thanks to my cast. Thanks to my crew. Thank you, FilmOne. Thank you, everyone. I’m short of words,” she wrote on Instagram.
Oversabi Aunty, a 2025 Nollywood comedy, was premiered in cinemas in December 2025. Its sustained audience turnout months after release underscores the growing appetite for locally produced theatrical content and further affirms Abraham’s standing as one of Nollywood’s most bankable creative figures.
Industry observers note that the film’s performance reflects a broader shift toward audience-driven commercial success, with strong storytelling, grassroots fan mobilisation, and strategic distribution playing decisive roles in box office outcomes.
