The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ogun State has raised alarm over what it described as a coordinated attempt by some “disgruntled politicians” to tarnish the image of Governor Dapo Abiodun and his administration.
In a statement signed by its Director of Publicity, Nuberu Olufemi, the party alleged that certain individuals had recruited “mercenaries” from outside the state to film bad roads across Ogun and present the materials online as evidence of government neglect.
According to the statement, the move is part of a wider effort to “manipulate public opinion” against Governor Abiodun, despite what the APC described as “unprecedented infrastructural achievements” in the state.
“These mercenaries are being paid to portray a false narrative about a governor who has constructed over 1,500 roads and delivered landmark projects such as the Atan–Lusada–Agbara Road, Mojoda–Epe Road, Sagamu Interchange–Abeokuta Road, and the Sango Ota–Lagos Road,” the statement read.
The APC insisted that no government could possibly rehabilitate every road within eight years, adding that the Abiodun administration had focused on completing major projects that had been abandoned or left to deteriorate by previous governments.
Olufemi accused the opposition of hypocrisy, saying that the same politicians responsible for the state’s poor road network during their tenure are now attempting to “blackmail a performing governor.”
“Knowing full well that their political relevance is fading, these desperate individuals have hired outsiders posing as neutral observers to badmouth the government,” he said. “Their campaign is deceptive and malicious, especially considering that no administration in Ogun’s history has matched Abiodun’s achievements.”
He further argued that critics who ignore completed projects while fixating on the few yet-to-be-completed ones are “political pirates seeking to sow discord.”
The statement also took aim at past critics, including “foreign-based blackmailers” and partisan lawyers, whom the party accused of running smear campaigns against the government.
Highlighting the administration’s record, the APC said Ogun State now boasts of the Gateway International Airport, hosts West Africa’s largest cement factory, and has become one of Nigeria’s most attractive destinations for investment, peace, and revenue growth.
“Governance is not about shouting ‘Abiodun is useless’ on social media,” the statement added. “The people of Ogun know better. The state is stable, secure, and progressive. Those who pretend otherwise are merely trying to stay relevant.”
The party concluded by challenging critics to provide verifiable data to counter the governor’s performance record, adding that “all they can do is rant while benefiting from his projects.”
