Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun State, has secured approval for a proposed German Village on its campus, alongside scholarship opportunities for 10 students to study in Germany, following a diplomatic engagement with the German government.
The development emerged from a high-level meeting between the university management and the Consul General of the Federal Republic of Germany in Lagos, Daniel Kroll, held on September 24, 2026.
Organised by OAU’s Department of Foreign Languages and the Vice-Chancellor’s Office, the meeting focused on strengthening academic cooperation, promoting German language studies and expanding opportunities for international exposure.
The university’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Simeon Bamire, welcomed the proposed German Village, describing it as a significant step towards deepening the institution’s international partnerships and improving students’ access to global educational opportunities.
Bamire said OAU had the land and academic capacity required to support the project, assuring the German government of the university’s readiness to provide the necessary institutional backing.
“We are profoundly gladdened by this enduring partnership, which continues to open doors of excellence for our students,” the vice-chancellor said.
He added that the university remained committed to partnerships capable of translating into practical benefits and international exposure for its students.
OAU scholarship beneficiaries rise to 22
During the meeting, Kroll disclosed that previous OAU beneficiaries of the German scholarship programme had distinguished themselves in their academic and professional pursuits, with some securing positions at the German parliament.
With 10 additional students selected under the scheme, the total number of OAU students who have benefited from the scholarship programme has increased to 22.
The German envoy commended the university for its consistent academic performance and expressed optimism about expanding cooperation between the institution and Germany.
“Our future prosperity is knowledge-based,” Kroll said, expressing admiration for OAU’s architecture and academic heritage.
He noted that the existing relationship had established a strong foundation for further collaboration, adding that more substantial areas of cooperation were yet to be explored.
The meeting was attended by senior university officials, including the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Professor Adesola Adrounmu; Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), Professor Oluropo Akinfala; and Dean of Student Affairs, Professor John Odedire, alongside other principal officers and academics.
OAU, Germany explore language policy and green energy
Discussions also covered the possibility of integrating German as a third language in Nigerian schools.
Kroll disclosed plans to advocate for the proposal at the federal level and sought expert advice from OAU’s language specialists on strategies for advancing the initiative.
The proposed policy would expand opportunities for Nigerian students to acquire German language skills and strengthen educational and cultural exchanges between Nigeria and Germany.
The German Consul General also identified OAU’s extensive campus land as suitable for ecological innovation and pledged support for green energy initiatives at the university.
In another development, OAU management requested additional library resources to strengthen German language teaching and learning. Kroll agreed to facilitate the request through diplomatic channels.
Students showcase Nigerian culture in German
A major highlight of the diplomatic engagement was a cultural performance by OAU students, who presented poems and songs originally composed in Yoruba but translated into German.
The performance impressed the visiting diplomat and demonstrated the university’s capacity to promote cultural exchange through foreign language education.
Students performed the translated works entirely in German, using music and poetry to connect Nigerian cultural heritage with German language studies.
The engagement underscores OAU’s efforts to expand international academic partnerships through scholarships, language education, cultural exchange and research collaboration.
With the proposed German Village, additional scholarship opportunities and prospective green energy initiatives, the university is seeking to deepen its relationship with Germany and broaden its students’ access to international academic and professional opportunities.
