The Nigerian Navy has appointed Captain Abiodun Folorunsho as its new Director of Naval Information, following the approval of the Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS), Vice Admiral Idi Abbas.
The appointment was announced on Tuesday in Abuja through a statement issued by the Chief of Policy and Plans (Navy), Rear Admiral Akinola Olodude.
According to the statement, Captain Folorunsho takes over from Commodore Aiwuyor Adams-Aliu, who has been redeployed as the Commander of the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) BEECROFT, the Navy’s premier operational base.
Rear Admiral Olodude disclosed that Captain Folorunsho is a member of the 50 Regular Course of the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA), Kaduna, and was commissioned into the Nigerian Navy in September 2003.
He said the newly appointed naval spokesperson holds a Bachelor of Engineering degree in Mechanical Engineering from the NDA and has acquired multiple postgraduate qualifications in war studies, defence and international affairs, energy management, and national security from reputable institutions in Pakistan, Sweden, and the United States.
Olodude further noted that Captain Folorunsho has undergone extensive professional military training, both locally and internationally. These include the Junior and Senior Staff Courses, the Naval Warfare Course, the United Nations Staff Officers Course, and the Higher Defence Management Course at the United States Naval War College.
Throughout his career, the officer has served in several command, operational, and instructional roles across naval ships and shore establishments.
His operational experience includes deployments aboard NNS ERINOMI, NNS AYAM, and NNS BARAMA, as well as participation in Operation SAFE HAVEN.
In addition, Captain Folorunsho served with the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) and held strategic appointments at the Naval Dockyard Limited in Lagos.
“Until his appointment, Captain Folorunsho was the Assistant Director, Plans/CNS Directives at the Naval Headquarters. He had earlier served as Chief Instructor, Department of Maritime Warfare, at the Armed Forces Command and Staff College, Jaji,” Olodude stated.
The naval headquarters spokesman added that the officer is a recipient of several prestigious awards, including the Chief of the Naval Staff Award for Best Graduating Student on both the Junior Course and the Naval Warfare Course, as well as the UNMISS Force Commander’s Commendation Award.
The appointment is seen as part of ongoing efforts by the Nigerian Navy to strengthen its strategic communication, public engagement, and information management under the current naval leadership.
