Proceedings in the ongoing murder trial of a former Oyo State chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Mukaila Lamidi, popularly known as Auxiliary, were abruptly suspended on Tuesday after the defendant collapsed inside the courtroom of the Oyo State High Court.
Eyewitnesses said Lamidi, who was seated as the trial commenced, suddenly slumped, triggering momentary panic within the courtroom. Court officials and security personnel swiftly intervened to attend to him, bringing the proceedings to an immediate halt.
A court official, speaking shortly after the incident, confirmed that the trial could not continue due to the unexpected medical emergency involving the defendant.
The presiding judge, Justice Bayo Taiwo, subsequently suspended the day’s sitting and ordered an adjournment.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) report, the incident occurred during the hearing of Suit No. I/74c/2024: The State vs. Mukaila Lamidi (Auxiliary).
Lamidi, a former Oyo State chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), is currently facing a 17-count charge filed by the state government. The charges include armed robbery, murder, attempted murder, and unlawful possession of firearms.
Prosecutors allege that the offences involve the illegal possession and use of high-calibre weapons, including one AK-47 rifle and two submachine guns. The case is regarded as one of the most high-profile criminal trials in Oyo State in recent years, drawing significant public and media attention.
As of press time, no official medical update had been issued regarding Lamidi’s condition, while the court is expected to fix a new date for the continuation of trial proceedings.
