The management of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso, has announced a two-week suspension of academic activities at its Iseyin campus following the death of a 200-level student who was killed by a commercial driver along the Iseyin/Saki Road in Oyo State.

The deceased, a student of the Department of Agricultural Economics, was reportedly run over by a yet-to-be-identified driver on Friday morning. Witnesses said the driver fled the scene immediately after the incident, prompting a violent protest by fellow students who later set the vehicle ablaze.

Confirming the development on Saturday, the university’s Registrar, Olayinka Balogun, described the incident as a “heartbreaking loss” that had cast a dark cloud over the institution’s community.

Balogun stated, “The management of LAUTECH, Ogbomoso, deeply regrets to announce the tragic passing of a 200-level student of the Department of Agricultural Economics, who was fatally wounded by a hit-and-run driver in Iseyin. This heartbreaking incident has cast a shadow over our university community, and we extend our deepest condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the deceased.”

He further explained that the university management had approved a two-week suspension of academic activities at the Iseyin campus, effective immediately, to allow students and staff to recover from the emotional impact of the tragedy.

According to him, “All students in the College of Agricultural Sciences and Renewable Natural Resources are to proceed on a two-week break. Academic activities will resume on Monday, November 24, 2025, while officers on essential services who may be required to be on duty will be informed in the usual manner.”

Balogun appealed to students to remain calm, stay safe, and support one another during the mourning period, urging them to honour the memory of their late colleague.

The tragic incident has sparked renewed concerns about road safety around the university’s Iseyin campus, with students and residents calling on authorities to enforce stricter traffic regulations and provide safer transport infrastructure in the area.
