The Lagos State Police Command has launched an investigation following the fatal shooting of Adedipe Adeyinkan, a suspected member of the Buccaneer Confraternity, in the Iponri area.
Adeyinkan, popularly known as “Agali,” was attacked at approximately 11:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 11, 2026. The incident occurred on the National Stadium Bridge heading toward Iponri.
In a statement released via X on Sunday, the Command confirmed that the victim was rushed to the Mainland General Hospital in Yaba, where he was pronounced dead.
Video footage of the incident shows the victim being shot while inside a white SUV, prompting onlookers to gather at the scene.
While the police are working to determine the exact circumstances of the attack, they have not yet provided a formal motive.
Unverified reports from the anti-cultism monitoring group, Naija Confra, suggest that Adeyinkan was a prominent figure within the Buccaneers confraternity in the Surulere axis.
The group further alleged that the killing could be tied to cult rivalries or political undertones, though these claims have not been independently verified by authorities.
The shooting comes amid a concerning rise in cult-related violence across Lagos.
Last week, three men were reportedly hacked to death by suspected cultists in the Epetedo community on Lagos Island while returning from a birthday celebration. One individual reportedly escaped the attack.
As of this report, the Lagos State Police Command has not announced any arrests in connection with either the Iponri shooting or the recent killings in Epetedo.
The recent wave of violence underscores the ongoing challenges faced by security agencies in curbing gang activity within the state.
