The Lagos State Police Command has suspended an Egungun festival scheduled to hold in the Oregun area of the state on Friday and Saturday, following the circulation of threatening posters and social media messages warning residents against free movement during the cultural event.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Command’s spokesperson, SP Abimbola Adebisi, said several suspects linked to the provocative publications were arrested after distributing handbills under the name “Oje Parapo of Oregun.” The materials reportedly restricted residents’ rights to movement, expression and personal dignity, actions the police described as capable of instilling fear and disrupting public order.

Adebisi said the Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, immediately ordered the suspension of the festival scheduled for November 27 and 28, 2025. He stressed that the command would not permit any activity that could threaten public safety or undermine peace in the state.

“The command will not tolerate any action capable of breaching public peace, threatening safety, or disrupting law and order in Lagos State,” the statement read.

The police also cited a similar case recorded on November 23, 2025, in Mafoluku, Oshodi, where officers under the Makinde Division apprehended 12 individuals allegedly involved in distributing inciting publications aimed at provoking unrest. All suspects remain in custody as investigations continue and will be charged upon completion of inquiries.

Reiterating the ban, CP Jimoh directed the Oje Parapo group to shelve any attempt to proceed with the Oregun festival, noting that security could not be guaranteed for an event already generating fear among residents. He condemned the panic caused by the circulated warnings, describing them as unacceptable.

The Command urged residents of Lagos to go about their lawful activities without fear, assuring the public of its sustained commitment to protecting lives and property across the state.
