The Lagos State Government has unveiled a comprehensive traffic management plan ahead of the commencement of Phase I reconstruction and expansion of Ogunnusi Road in Ikeja Local Government Area.
The Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, disclosed the development in a statement posted on X on Sunday, noting that the plan would facilitate the Federal Ministry of Works’ resumption of work on the corridor from March 6, 2026.
According to the commissioner, the project covers the stretch from Ojodu-Berger Bus Stop to Mobil Filling Station Junction (Ijaye/Agege bound) and forms part of a broader 9.0-kilometre dual carriage corridor upgrade, both inbound and outbound.
Project Timeline and Scope
Osiyemi explained that the entire reconstruction project, comprising Phases I and II, is scheduled to run from March 6, 2026, to January 6, 2028.
Phase I will focus on a 4.5-kilometre stretch from Ojodu-Berger Bus Stop inward to Mobil Filling Station Junction (Ijaye/Agege bound). The first phase is expected to commence on Friday, March 6, 2026, and conclude on February 6, 2027.
The reconstruction aims to enhance road capacity, improve traffic flow, and strengthen the structural integrity of one of Ikeja’s busiest arterial corridors.
Traffic Diversions and Alternative Routes
The commissioner stated that vehicular access will be restricted within the designated construction zone during Phase I.
Motorists travelling inward to Ijaye/Agege from Ojodu-Berger via Ogunnusi Road will be diverted to use a contraflow on the Ojodu-Berger-bound carriageway for approximately one kilometre before rejoining the main carriageway.
As an alternative, drivers may utilise Dr. Nurudeen Olowopopo Way to connect with Otunba Jobifele Way, link Obafemi Awolowo Way, and access Lateef Jakande Road to reach their destinations.
Articulated vehicle and truck drivers travelling from the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway towards Agege have been advised to divert through Ojota/Maryland, proceed to Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way, access Kodesoh Street, connect to Oba Akran Avenue up to Guinness Roundabout, and continue via Ogba Road to Pen Cinema.
Motorists heading from Ijaye/Agege towards Ojodu-Berger will experience through traffic but will be diverted into a contraflow arrangement with Ijaye/Agege-bound traffic for about one kilometre near the construction zone before regaining full access after the work area.
To mitigate disruptions, emergency tow vehicles will be strategically stationed along the corridor to ensure rapid response to breakdowns and traffic incidents.
Osiyemi urged road users to exercise patience, adhere strictly to traffic signage, and cooperate with traffic management officials deployed across the axis, emphasising that the temporary measures are essential for the safe and efficient execution of the project.
Strategic Importance of Ogunnusi Road
Ogunnusi Road serves as a critical arterial link between Ojodu-Berger and Agege, connecting several residential, commercial, and industrial hubs in Ikeja. It also functions as an alternative route to the ever-busy Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
Given its strategic relevance and high traffic volume, particularly during peak hours, the corridor falls under federal jurisdiction, placing structural rehabilitation responsibilities on the Federal Ministry of Works. Meanwhile, the Lagos State Government oversees traffic diversion and enforcement during construction phases.
In recent months, the state government has increasingly adopted phased reconstruction strategies and proactive traffic advisories to minimise disruptions associated with major infrastructure projects across the commercial capital.
