The Lagos State Police Command has arrested some officers attached to the Alagbado Police Station following the fatal shooting of two persons during a stop-and-search operation along Old Ota Road on Friday.
The incident reportedly occurred when the officers attempted to intercept a vehicle suspected to be conveying individuals involved in internet fraud.
Sources disclosed that after an initial failed attempt to halt the vehicle, the officers opened fire again. Tragically, the bullets struck two passengers riding on a motorcycle that was passing through the area at the time.
Eyewitness accounts indicated that despite the unfolding chaos, some of the officers allegedly pursued the suspected vehicle across state lines into Ogun State in a bid to apprehend its occupants.
Confirming the development, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Lagos State Command, SP Abimbola Adebisi, said the officers involved had been taken into custody.
“The officers involved in the unfortunate shooting incident that occurred today in Alagbado have been arrested and taken into custody,” she stated.
Adebisi further disclosed that the Commissioner of Police had ordered a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting. She added that security personnel had been adequately deployed to prevent any breakdown of law and order in the affected area.
“The Commissioner of Police has ordered a thorough and intensive investigation into the incident, as well as the adequate deployment of personnel to forestall any breakdown of law and order. Normalcy has been restored to the area,” she said.
The Command assured residents that justice would be served and pledged to make the outcome of the investigation public upon its conclusion.
The incident has heightened public concern over the conduct of stop-and-search operations, particularly in densely populated communities, underscoring the urgent need for strict adherence to operational guidelines and rules of engagement by law enforcement officers.
