The Department of State Services (DSS) has filed a six-count charge against a 27-year-old man, Innocent Chukwuemeka Onukwume, for allegedly advocating a military coup and posting messages considered capable of inciting public disorder.
The charges, filed before the Federal High Court in Abuja, allege that Onukwume, a resident of Umusayo Layout in Oyigbo Local Government Area of Rivers State, committed the offences in October 2025 through posts on his verified X (formerly Twitter) account, identified as @theagroman.
According to the DSS, the accused person’s social media activities were aimed at instigating fear, alarm, and disaffection against the federal government. The agency claimed that Onukwume’s online statements violated several provisions of Nigerian criminal laws, including Sections 46A (1) and 59 (1) of the Criminal Code Act, as well as Section 24 (1)(b) of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act, 2024 (as amended).
One of the counts cited in the charge alleged that Onukwume, “having the intent to cause fear and alarm to the public or disturb the public peace,” posted on his account a message calling for a coup in Nigeria, which read:
“A coup in Nigeria is needed. Dispose of APC, suspend the Nigeria government and join the AES. That is all we need now.”
Another count accused him of intentionally posting messages designed to stir hostility and resentment against the government. In one of such messages, he reportedly wrote:
“It will happen eventually, Nigerians. The military needs your support now! Only them can save this country. The bastard in Aso Rock has basically sold this country to the West and they run our intelligence apparatus. Only the military can reset this country.”
The DSS maintained that such posts were capable of undermining national security and public confidence in democratic institutions.
The case is expected to come up for hearing soon at the Federal High Court in Abuja, where Onukwume will be formally arraigned.
