Police detain SUV driver as investigations into crash deepen

The Ogun State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of the driver of the Lexus SUV involved in the fatal road accident that claimed the lives of two close associates of world boxing champion Anthony Joshua.

The state police spokesperson, Oluseyi Babaseyi, disclosed this in a statement issued on Thursday, noting that the driver is currently in custody as investigations continue. According to the police, the arrest forms part of ongoing efforts to establish the circumstances surrounding the tragic crash.

“The driver of the Lexus SUV in connection with the Anthony Joshua accident case is currently in custody. Investigations are ongoing,” the statement read in part.

The accident occurred on Monday at about 11 a.m. around the Danco axis of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, when the Lexus SUV, with registration number KRD 850 HN, reportedly collided with a stationary truck. The impact resulted in the death of two occupants of the vehicle, while Joshua sustained injuries.

The deceased have been identified as Ayodele Kelvin Olu (36), a Nigerian-British citizen, and Gami Sina (36), a British national.

Meanwhile, the Lagos and Ogun state governments have confirmed that Anthony Joshua has been discharged from hospital following medical evaluation. This was contained in a joint statement released on Wednesday and signed by Kayode Akinmade, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, and Lagos State Commissioner for Information, Gbenga Omotosho.

According to the statement, Joshua was discharged from Lagoon Hospital, Ikoyi, late Wednesday after doctors certified him clinically fit to continue his recovery from home.

The two state governments expressed deep condolences to the families of the deceased, describing the incident as painful and deeply unfortunate. They also offered prayers for the repose of the souls of the departed and strength for their loved ones to bear the loss.

The statement further revealed that Anthony Joshua and his mother visited a Lagos funeral home on Wednesday to pay their final respects to the late friends, whose bodies were being prepared for repatriation later that evening.

Governors Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State and Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State also expressed appreciation to members of the public for the outpouring of concern, prayers, and goodwill following the accident. They equally thanked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for what they described as his fatherly support during the period.

In addition, the governments commended the doctors and medical personnel at Lagoon Hospital, Ikoyi, for their professionalism, dedication, and quality of care in attending to Joshua and other injured victims of the crash.
