The Dangote Refinery is set for a massive expansion that will see its production capacity rise from 650,000 barrels per day to 1.4 million barrels per day, a development that will make it the largest refinery in the world.
Speaking at a press conference in Lagos on Sunday, Aliko Dangote, President of the Dangote Group, said the decision reflects a bold confidence in Nigeria’s economic future and aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s goal of transforming the country into a global hub for refined petroleum products.
“We are more than doubling the barrels to 1.4 million from 650,000,” Dangote announced. “This will make it the largest refinery in the world, surpassing India’s Jamnagar Refinery.”
Dangote described the expansion as a statement of faith in Nigeria, Africa, and the continent’s capacity to define its energy destiny.
He commended the Federal Government for policies that have strengthened the industrial landscape, citing the Nigeria First Policy, Naira-for-Crude Policy, and the One-Stop Shop Initiative as transformative measures that have revitalized the downstream sector and spurred private investment in refining.
According to him, government intervention was also instrumental in resolving recent disruptions at the refinery, which were linked to union activities and sabotage attempts.
The expansion marks a new phase in Dangote’s industrial revolution and positions Nigeria at the forefront of global refining capacity, promising both economic growth and energy independence.
