At least three people, two pedestrians and a motorist, were injured on Sunday following a serious road traffic accident involving a Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)-laden truck and a private vehicle at Apakun Bridge, inward Oshodi, Lagos.
The accident occurred at the crest of the bridge when a heavy-duty truck, with registration number EKY 120 YK, reportedly travelling at excessive speed, rammed into a moving silver Toyota Corolla with registration number EKY 289 HM.
Confirming the incident, the spokesperson of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, Adebayo Taofiq, said preliminary investigations indicated that the truck driver failed to observe basic traffic safety protocols, resulting in the collision.
According to Taofiq, the impact of the crash caused significant traffic disruption and posed an immediate threat to lives and property in the area.
He added that two pedestrians were struck during the incident, while the driver of the Toyota Corolla sustained severe injuries.
Officers of LASTMA promptly mobilised to the scene, where they carried out a coordinated rescue operation. The injured pedestrians and the car driver were safely extricated from the wreckage and rushed to a nearby hospital for urgent medical attention.
To prevent further incidents and secure the area, operatives from the Ajao Police Division provided security support during the rescue and evacuation exercise.
The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service was also deployed as a precautionary measure due to the hazardous nature of the truck’s gas content.
Reacting to the crash, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Sola Giwa, strongly condemned the increasing number of road accidents linked to reckless driving and overspeeding, particularly involving trucks, tankers, and articulated vehicles.
Giwa described such conduct as dangerous and irresponsible, warning that the Lagos State Government would not hesitate to apply the full weight of the law against drivers found endangering lives through negligent or unlawful driving practices. He urged motorists to strictly adhere to traffic laws and speed limits.
The transportation adviser also prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured victims and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to enhancing road safety and traffic management across the state.
LASTMA reiterated its call for collective responsibility on the roads, urging all motorists to drive cautiously, respect speed regulations, and comply fully with traffic laws in the interest of public safety.
