A former Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole, has described ex-Osun State Governor BisiAkande as one of the enduring pillars of Nigeria’s democratic evolution, lauding his life of service, discipline and principled leadership.

Adewole made the remarks in a statement issued in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, on Sunday to commemorate Akande’s 87th birthday. He described the elder statesman as “an elder whose life story is woven into the fabric of our nation’s political history, particularly in the South-West.”

According to the former Vice Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Akande distinguished himself during his tenure as governor through prudent management of public resources, a simple lifestyle and a rare commitment to accountability in governance.

“As a former governor, he proved that leadership is not about personal luxury but about sacrifice, service and legacy,” he said.

Adewole, who also serves as Secretary of the Akande Foundation, noted that Akande at 87 remains “a bridge between generations,” underscoring his central role in the evolution of progressive politics in Nigeria – from the Action Group and the Unity Party of Nigeria to the Alliance for Democracy and, ultimately, the All Progressives Congress (APC).

He described Akande’s leadership style as frank, principled and consistent, attributes that have earned him respect across political, ethnic and religious divides.

“He is known for speaking the truth as he sees it, without malice, fear or favour. In an age of political convenience, Chief Akande has remained a symbol of conviction,” Adewole added.

The former minister further portrayed Akande as a champion of progressive ideals and federalism, as well as a custodian of the values of honesty, modesty and hard work.

Offering prayers for the celebrant, Adewole said: “As we honour Akande at this remarkable milestone, we pray that God Almighty will continue to grant him good health, peace of mind and strength. May his remaining years be filled with joy, and may the ideals he has stood for continue to inspire leaders today and generations yet unborn.”

“Baba, at 87, you remain a guiding light. Nigeria salutes you. Osun celebrates you. History records you,” he concluded.

Akande rose through the ranks of public service with a reputation for discipline and integrity, serving as governor of Osun State between 1999 and 2003 under the Alliance for Democracy.

He later became the pioneer National Chairman of the APC following the merger of major opposition parties, including the Action Congress of Nigeria, the All Nigeria Peoples Party and the Congress for Progressive Change, in February 2013.
