One person was killed and three others sustained serious injuries on Friday after a Lexus SUV crashed along the Lagos Coastal Road, inward Eko Hotel.
The fatal accident involved a grey Lexus Jeep 350 with registration number LSD 554 KV, which reportedly lost control, collided with a roadside pole and overturned.
LASTMA said preliminary security information indicated that the crash resulted in one fatality and three serious injuries.
Operatives of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) monitoring traffic along the Coastal Road quickly mobilised to the scene, secured the affected section and coordinated the emergency response.
With assistance from Good Samaritans, the three injured victims were rescued from the wreckage and taken to Duck-Yard Hospital within the Military Zone for urgent medical treatment.
Security personnel from Victoria Island also supported the emergency operation, while LASTMA officials removed the damaged vehicle from the carriageway.
LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, condoled with the family of the deceased and urged motorists to exercise caution, particularly by avoiding excessive speed and reckless driving.
The crash occurred barely two weeks after the Federal Government raised concerns over repeated safety violations on the Lagos section of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway.
Federal Controller of Works in Lagos, Olufemi Dare, had warned that motorists were driving at speeds of up to 120km/h on sections of the highway where the prescribed speed limit is 30km/h.
The Federal Government subsequently threatened to close the Lagos section if safety violations, including speeding and other forms of misuse, persisted.
The latest crash also adds to a series of fatal incidents recorded on the coastal road in recent months.
In August, one person was killed and two others injured in a multiple-vehicle crash involving a Mack flat-bed articulated trailer, a Toyota mini truck and two motorcycles along New Road by Coastal Road, inward Jakande.
LASTMA said preliminary findings indicated that the trailer driver lost control while travelling at high speed before crashing into the mini truck.
Bakare-Oki urged motorists to obey speed limits and exercise greater caution while using the route.
LASTMA also advised motorists and other road users to report crashes, broken-down vehicles, obstructions and other emergencies through its toll-free short code 3367 for prompt assistance.
