The All Progressives Congress (APC) has disowned Abayomi Hunye as its candidate for the 2027 Ogun State governorship election, accusing him of impersonating the party’s standard-bearer.
The party has also petitioned the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and the Director General of the State Security Service (DSS), seeking an investigation, arrest and prosecution of Hunye over his alleged conduct.
The disclaimer and separate petitions, dated August 24, 2026, surfaced as the dispute over the APC governorship ticket intensifies.
In the disclaimer signed by the APC National Secretary, Senator Ajibola Basiru, the party said Hunye remained suspended and therefore lacked the legal or moral authority to act or speak on its behalf.
The party identified Senator Adeola Solomon Olamilekan as its duly nominated governorship candidate, with Balogun Kudirat Abiodun as his running mate.
According to the APC, the names of Olamilekan and Abiodun had already been uploaded to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) portal, with acknowledgment slips confirming their submission on August 7, 2026.
The party said Hunye’s suspension stemmed from a petition by the Executive Committee of his Tube Ward in Ipokia Local Government Area, dated March 23, 2026.
The petition reportedly accused him of “nefarious dealings” and “anti-party activities”.
The Ipokia Local Government Executive Committee subsequently ratified the suspension on March 27, citing provisions of Article 21 of the APC constitution.
The Ogun State Working Committee approved the suspension on April 7 following a meeting at the party secretariat in Abeokuta.
The committee also formally notified the party’s national screening committee for governorship aspirants of the ratification on May 5.
The APC warned individuals and organisations against conducting political activities with Hunye in the name of the party, saying anyone who does so would be acting at their own risk.
It also cautioned media organisations against providing him with platforms to present himself as an APC representative, adding that its legal team had been directed to pursue contempt proceedings.
APC petitions police, DSS
In separate petitions, equally dated August 24, the APC’s Director of Administration, Ayoola Peter Olajolo, accused Hunye of impersonation, conduct capable of causing a breach of the peace and violating provisions of the Electoral Act, 2026.
The petitions were addressed to the IGP at Force Headquarters, Abuja, and the DG of the DSS.
The party requested that the security agencies invite Hunye for questioning and prosecute him if investigations establish a case against him.
It also asked the agencies to restrain him from further presenting himself as the APC’s governorship candidate in Ogun State.
The documents showed that the petition to the police was received at Force Headquarters on August 24, while the DSS received its copy at 6:39 p.m. the same day.
The APC assured the security agencies that its national and Ogun State structures would fully cooperate with any investigation into the matter.
The development further complicates the battle over the APC governorship ticket ahead of the January 2027 Ogun State election, with the party insisting that Olamilekan is its recognised candidate.
