A midnight robbery in the Shagari village area of Akure, the Ondo State capital, has claimed the life of a 47-year-old technician, Idris Clement, after armed hoodlums stormed the community and attacked residents.
The incident occurred around 1 a.m. on Sunday when the assailants reportedly invaded the neighbourhood, robbing residents of their valuables and unleashing violence on anyone who resisted.
Speaking on the attack, the deceased’s son, AbdulFatai Clement, said the robbers brutally assaulted his father with axes and cutlasses before one of them pulled out a gun and shot him.
According to him, the attackers fled the scene immediately after the shooting, leaving the family and neighbours to rush the victim to a hospital for emergency treatment.
He explained that Clement had lost a significant amount of blood by the time he arrived at the medical facility, where doctors later confirmed his death.
The tragic incident has left residents of the community in shock, with many expressing concern over the growing threat of violent crime in the area.
Confirming the development, the spokesperson for the Ondo State Police Command, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, said detectives had already arrested one suspect in connection with the killing.
Jimoh stated that the suspect is currently being interrogated at the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID) as part of efforts to uncover the circumstances surrounding the attack and apprehend other members of the robbery gang.
The police spokesperson assured the bereaved family and residents that the command remained committed to ensuring justice, adding that everyone found to have participated in the crime would be prosecuted in accordance with the law.
Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
