Motorists in Lagos State have been directed to ensure their vehicles display valid and visible registration number plates as the police prepare to launch a statewide enforcement operation targeting traffic offenders.

The Lagos State Police Command said the exercise, which begins on Monday, June 15, 2026, will focus on vehicles operating with covered, obscured, unauthorised, defaced or missing registration plates.

According to the Command, the operation is part of broader efforts to strengthen security across the state and prevent criminals from using vehicles with concealed identities to evade detection.

In a statement issued on Sunday by the Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Abimbola Adebisi, the enforcement drive was linked to a directive from the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, aimed at improving public safety and enhancing crime-fighting capabilities.

The statement noted that the exercise would be supervised by the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, Tijani Fatai.

“The Lagos State Police Command, in compliance with the directive of the Inspector-General of Police aimed at enhancing public safety, strengthening security and denying criminal elements the opportunity to conceal their identities and activities, will commence a statewide enforcement exercise against vehicles with covered, obscured, unauthorised, defaced or no registration number plates,” the statement said.

The police disclosed that all Area Commanders and Divisional Police Officers across the state had been directed to implement the order and ensure motorists comply with the regulations governing vehicle registration plates.

Authorities warned that any vehicle found violating the directive would be impounded and subjected to further investigation in accordance with existing laws and procedures.

The Command explained that the initiative would assist security agencies in identifying vehicles more effectively, tracking criminal suspects, investigating crimes and strengthening the state’s overall security framework.

Police authorities emphasised that the operation was not designed to harass or inconvenience law-abiding residents but rather to serve as a preventive measure aimed at improving public safety.

Motorists, transport operators and fleet managers were therefore advised to ensure that their vehicles carry valid and clearly visible registration number plates at all times.

Vehicle owners were also encouraged to keep their registration and other relevant documents up to date and readily available for inspection by law enforcement officers when required.

Reaffirming its commitment to safeguarding lives and property, the Lagos State Police Command called on residents to support the exercise by remaining vigilant and reporting suspicious vehicles, individuals and activities through the Command’s emergency channels.
