The Ondo State Police Command has arrested a suspected kidnap kingpin, Abdullahi Lawal, who had allegedly been terrorising communities in the Akoko area of the state.

Lawal was apprehended in Ikare-Akoko, Akoko North East Local Government Area, following months of intelligence-led operations by security operatives.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, disclosed the development in a statement issued on Tuesday in Akure.

He described the suspect as the leader of a kidnapping syndicate allegedly responsible for criminal activities in the Akoko axis.

According to Jimoh, Lawal, who resides at Aderoju Camp in Ugbe Akoko Town, was identified as the mastermind behind the abduction of one Aremu Tijani on August 18, 2025. The victim was reportedly kidnapped while working on his bush farm in the Ikare-Akoko area.

The police spokesperson recalled that security operatives had earlier engaged members of the gang in a tactical operation shortly after the incident. During the confrontation, three members of the criminal group were neutralised while four others were arrested.

However, Lawal reportedly escaped from the scene at the time, despite sustaining gunshot injuries during the encounter with security personnel.

Following his escape, the police placed him on an intelligence watchlist and launched an intensive manhunt, combining surveillance operations and discreet investigations to track his movements and possible hideouts.

Jimoh explained that the sustained intelligence efforts eventually led to Lawal’s arrest in Ikare-Akoko.

He added that the suspect had already made useful confessional statements to investigators and would be charged in court after the completion of investigations.

Reaffirming the command’s resolve to tackle violent crimes, the police spokesperson said the Ondo State Commissioner of Police, Adebowale Lawal, commended the officers involved in the operation for their professionalism, dedication, and resilience.

The police chief also appreciated members of the public for providing information that aided the arrest and other ongoing security operations.

Jimoh urged residents to remain vigilant and continue cooperating with law enforcement agencies by reporting suspicious activities to the nearest police station or through established security channels.

“The command assures the public that no criminal will be allowed to operate freely in Ondo State, as proactive measures remain in place to safeguard lives and property,” the statement added.
