The Osun State House of Assembly on Monday passed a bill amending key provisions of the state’s local government law, marking a significant legislative move aimed at updating the existing legal framework governing grassroots administration.
The legislation, titled “Osun State Local Government Amendment No. 2 Bill 2026,” was approved following its third reading during plenary in Osogbo, according to a report by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
Earlier in the session, the Chairman of the House Committee on Public Accounts, Lawal Bamidele, presented the committee’s report on the proposed amendment and outlined its recommendations for consideration by members.
Following the presentation, the Speaker of the House, Adewale Egbedun, called for the adoption of the committee’s report.
The motion was moved by the Majority Leader, Babajide Adewumi, and received the backing of lawmakers.
Adewumi also moved the motion for the bill’s third reading, which was subsequently passed without objection.
Speaking after the bill’s passage, Egbedun disclosed that clean copies of the amendment would be transmitted to Governor Ademola Adeleke for assent, in line with legislative procedure.
The amendment seeks to review aspects of the Osun State Local Government Law, Cap 72, Volume IV, Laws of Osun State 2002, alongside other related matters.
While specific details of the amended sections were not disclosed during plenary, the legislative action underscores the Assembly’s continuing oversight and reform efforts within the local government system.
The House later adjourned its sitting to March 2.
The passage of the amendment bill is expected to generate fresh discourse around local government administration in Osun, particularly amid ongoing national conversations about fiscal autonomy, accountability, and structural reforms at the grassroots level.
