Heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua has been discharged from a Lagos hospital following treatment for injuries sustained in a fatal road accident along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in Ogun State.

The development was confirmed on Thursday in a joint statement issued by the Lagos and Ogun state governments. The statement was signed by Gbenga Omotoso, Commissioner for Information and Strategy in Lagos State, and Kayode Akinmade, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to the Ogun State Government.

According to the statement, Joshua was discharged after medical assessments confirmed that he was clinically fit to continue his recovery at home.

The two state governments expressed deep condolences to the families of Joshua’s friends and associates, identified as Lateef Ayodele and Cina Gami, who lost their lives in the crash.

“The governments of Lagos and Ogun states once again commiserate with the families of the two young men – Lateef Ayodele and Cina Gami – who tragically lost their lives in the road accident involving Anthony Joshua on December 29, 2025. We pray that God grants their souls eternal rest and gives their families the strength to bear this painful loss,” the statement read.

It added that although Joshua has been discharged, he remains emotionally distraught over the deaths of his close associates.

“Anthony Joshua was discharged from hospital late this afternoon. Though heavy-hearted and full of emotions over the loss of his two close friends, he was deemed clinically fit to recuperate from home,” the statement said.

The governments also disclosed that Joshua, accompanied by his mother, visited a funeral home in Lagos on Wednesday to pay their final respects to the deceased ahead of their repatriation later that evening.

In expressing appreciation, Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun and Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu acknowledged the widespread public concern and outpouring of sympathy that followed the incident.

They also commended President Bola Tinubu for what they described as his “fatherly support” throughout the period.

The statement further praised the medical team at Lagoon Hospital Ikoyi for their professionalism and quality of care in treating Joshua and other injured persons involved in the accident.

“The quality of care and professionalism displayed by the doctors and medical personnel are truly commendable,” the governments said.
