The Lagos State House of Assembly has commenced a detailed review of the 2024 Auditor-General’s report, reaffirming its resolve to deepen fiscal discipline and strengthen accountability across Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs).
Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee (State), Kehinde Olaide Joseph, announced the beginning of the review during a media briefing on Tuesday at the Lateef Jakande Complex, Ikeja. He described the process as a statutory exercise aimed at improving governance structures rather than targeting individuals.
Joseph underscored the Assembly’s constitutional responsibility to scrutinise government operations, noting that legislative oversight remained essential to ensuring prudent management of public resources and adherence to financial regulations.
“The oversight function is indispensable in confirming that government agencies and programmes deliver expected outcomes, provide value for money and comply with policies, laws and ethical standards,” he said. “We are committed to ensuring transparency, accountability and probity in the management of public funds and resources.”
He disclosed that heads of MDAs flagged in the Auditor-General’s report would be invited to clarify concerns raised in the document. According to him, full cooperation and openness are expected throughout the exercise.
Joseph further explained that the review would assess compliance with budgetary provisions, identify systemic weaknesses, prevent financial mismanagement and enhance the optimisation of public investments for the benefit of all residents of Lagos State.
Reiterating that the exercise was not a witch-hunt, the committee chairman noted that the engagement was intended to fortify administrative systems and forestall future lapses. He, however, emphasised that breaches of financial laws would not be excused.
Joseph also expressed appreciation to the Speaker of the House, Mudashiru Obasa, praising his leadership and continuous support, which he said had strengthened the committee’s capacity to fulfil its mandate.
