The Osun State House of Assembly has passed the Islamic and Traditional Marriages (Registration) Bill, providing a legal framework for the recognition, documentation, and protection of marriages conducted under Islamic and traditional rites in the state.

According to a statement issued in Osogbo by the Chief Press Secretary to the Speaker, Olamide Tiamiyu, the Assembly also passed two other important legislations, the Water Users’ Association (Irrigation) Bill and the Osun State Road Traffic Law and Vehicle Inspection Service Bill, 2025.

Tiamiyu explained that the Islamic and Traditional Marriages (Registration) Bill, sponsored by Hon. Lawal Bamidele Rasheed, seeks to ensure that marriages conducted under customary and Islamic laws are formally recognized by the state. The legislation aims to safeguard the rights of spouses and provide legal backing for documentation and dispute resolution related to such unions.

During plenary, the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Adewale Egbedun, commended members for their diligence and commitment to the welfare of the people. He said the passage of the bills reflected the Assembly’s resolve to promote social justice, cultural preservation, and sustainable development in Osun State.

“The Islamic and Traditional Marriages Registration law respects our cultural and religious values while ensuring that all marriages within Osun State are duly recognised and protected under the law,” Egbedun stated.

He further explained that the Water Users’ Association (Irrigation) Bill seeks to establish a legal and institutional framework for the creation and management of Water Users’ Associations (WUAs) to oversee irrigation systems across the state. The law, once signed by Governor Ademola Adeleke, will empower farmers and rural communities to manage irrigation infrastructure efficiently, boost crop yield, and enhance food security.

Also passed was the Osun State Road Traffic Law and Vehicle Inspection Service Bill, 2025, an executive bill designed to ensure effective inspection, control, and enforcement of roadworthiness standards for vehicles, motorcycles, tricycles, trucks, and trailers within the state. The legislation also mandates collaboration with relevant agencies to enhance road safety and compliance.

Egbedun announced that clean copies of the bills would be forwarded to Governor Adeleke for assent, noting that their enactment would mark significant milestones in Osun’s pursuit of cultural respect, legal modernization, and economic growth.
