A former Ogun State governor, Ibikunle Amosun, has urged Nigerians to uphold the principle of rotational presidency as preparations gradually build toward the 2027 general elections, stressing that the arrangement is central to justice, equity and national cohesion.

Amosun made the call on Sunday while addressing supporters during events marking his 68th birthday celebration at the Ake Palace Pavilion in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital.

In his remarks, the former governor appealed for patience and understanding for the administration of President Bola Tinubu, describing the current phase of governance as a necessary transition period for long-term national stability.

He also encouraged his supporters to remain steadfast, assuring them that his next political decision would be communicated in due course.

Amosun argued that respect for power rotation between the North and the South remains fundamental to Nigeria’s unity, noting that the North had completed eight years in office under former President Muhammadu Buhari before the emergence of Tinubu.

“In the interest of Nigeria, we must respect rotation. The North has had eight years. Now it is the turn of the South, and we have President Tinubu. Anyone who truly loves Nigeria should support this arrangement,” Amosun said.

He further maintained that Tinubu’s leadership transcends regional considerations, insisting that the president is governing in the collective interest of the country rather than for sectional advantage.

“He is representing all of us in the South and indeed Nigeria. My support is not about personal interest; it is about the overall interest of the nation,” he added.

The former senator also called on party members across Ogun State to remain loyal to the structure of the All Progressives Congress (APC), urging unity and discipline within the party.

While acknowledging the economic hardship associated with ongoing reforms, Amosun expressed optimism about Tinubu’s policy direction, describing the measures as painful but unavoidable steps toward economic recovery, fiscal stability and sustainable national development.
